Lumens describe the amount of visible light emitted by a source. Watts describe electrical power consumption. When comparing LED lighting, check both: equal wattage does not guarantee equal light output.

Lumens and watts answer different questions

Metric What it tells you What it does not establish
Lumens (lm) Total visible light output. Illuminance at a particular work surface.
Watts (W) Electrical input power. How bright a luminaire will appear.
Lumens per watt (lm/W) Light output relative to power input. Complete suitability for an installation.

A simple calculation

Luminous efficacy is light output divided by input power. For an illustrative luminaire producing 12,000 lumens while drawing 100 watts, the calculation is 12,000 ÷ 100 = 120 lm/W. These are hypothetical values used only to explain the relationship, not ratings for a TORMIN product.

When comparing actual datasheets, use figures measured on a comparable basis. Check whether the published information concerns the complete luminaire or only its LED components.

Why the lighting layout still matters

Light must reach the intended task area. Beam distribution, mounting height, surfaces and obstructions influence that result. A higher lumen value alone is therefore not a complete replacement recommendation.

The Department of Energy’s LED basics explains why lighting quality involves more than one performance measure. Before selecting a replacement, compare the relevant photometric information and the exact luminaire specifications, not only the number of watts printed on the old fitting.
