Warehouse lighting needs to support more than floor-level visibility. Teams read labels on racks, pick items at different heights and move between storage, packing and dispatch areas. Rack geometry can block light that appears sufficient on an empty-building calculation. TORMIN’s high-bay, fixed LED and yard-lighting ranges can be reviewed as separate parts of the scheme, with controls and emergency provision coordinated to the operation.

Racked storage and picking aisles

Provide rack height, aisle width and picking levels. Review light on vertical rack faces as well as the floor, and account for the way stored goods cast shadows. Position fittings in relation to aisles rather than distributing them uniformly across the roof without checking the racks.

Packing, sorting and checking

Packing benches and dispatch checks involve closer work than general storage. Identify label-reading positions, barcode workflows and reflective packaging. Separate task requirements from aisle lighting so operators can work without strong shadows or uncomfortable glare.

Loading docks and external yards

Review the transition between indoor and outdoor light, vehicle approaches and pedestrian routes. Aim floodlights with the driver’s viewing direction in mind. Include exposure to rain, dust and impact risks, and check that equipment and open doors do not block the intended coverage.

Cold storage and special goods

Low temperatures, condensation and cleaning cycles require model-specific checks. Battery-backed equipment and sensors also need their operating conditions confirmed. If stored goods create a flammable-gas or combustible-dust hazard, use the site classification rather than treating the area as ordinary storage.

What to confirm before selecting a light.

Use these requirements to build a project-specific specification.

Rack geometry: Supply a dimensioned plan and elevations showing rack height, aisles, cross-aisles and mezzanines. Mark the locations where labels and goods need to be seen.
Light distribution: Review maintained illumination and uniformity on relevant horizontal and vertical planes. Check glare along forklift and pedestrian travel directions.
Operating pattern: Identify continuously occupied zones, intermittent aisles and daylight areas. Confirm sensor coverage, dimming compatibility and control behaviour before specifying controls.
Environment and access: Record temperatures, moisture, cleaning exposure and maintenance access. Confirm enclosure protection and service arrangements for each warehouse zone.

Why is floor illuminance not enough for a racked warehouse?

The floor is only one viewing surface. Workers also need to identify stock and labels on vertical rack faces. Tall or densely loaded racks can create shadows, so the lighting assessment should include the relevant picking levels and viewing directions.

Can we install high-bay lights directly above the racks?

That position may obstruct useful light or make maintenance difficult. The layout should be coordinated with aisle centres, roof structures, sprinklers and access requirements. Final placement should follow the photometric assessment and installation constraints.

Will sensors reduce our energy use?

They can reduce operating time or output in suitable intermittently used zones, but savings depend on occupancy, daylight and control settings. Confirm coverage and response for the rack geometry and vehicle movement. Do not use an assumed saving percentage as a project guarantee.

Can the same luminaire be used in a freezer and loading bay?

Only if the selected variant’s ratings cover both environments. Check minimum ambient temperature, moisture and condensation exposure, electrical equipment and any emergency battery limits. Provide the actual conditions for each area rather than a single building-wide temperature.
