A mine contains very different lighting environments: underground roadways and chambers, production working areas, and surface workshops or handling facilities. Equipment intended for an underground mine with firedamp risk is not interchangeable with an industrial gas-area fitting. TORMIN’s DGS and DGC mining ranges provide a starting point for underground applications, while the mine operator’s specification and applicable approval requirements determine whether an exact product can be used.

Underground roadways

Record tunnel dimensions, mounting positions, traffic and obstructions. Plan visibility along the route and at changes in direction or level. Coordinate spacing with supports, cables and other services, and account for dirt accumulation and access for inspection.

Chambers and equipment rooms

Pump rooms, substations and underground service spaces need light on controls and equipment faces, not only the floor. Identify local task positions, emergency arrangements and maintenance access. Confirm the electrical supply and cable-entry requirements for each location.

Mining working areas

Changing geometry, nearby equipment and mechanical exposure affect placement and protection. Identify the working surface, mounting structure and likely sources of impact or vibration. Any lighting arrangement must fit the mine’s operating and inspection procedures.

Surface workshops and handling areas

Assess surface buildings and yards separately. General industrial products may be reviewed for non-hazardous workshops, but dust or gas hazards still require a formal classification. Do not extend an underground product approval—or an ordinary industrial rating—to another environment without checking its scope.

Mine approval
State the mine type, jurisdiction and operator’s approval requirements. Request current mine-specific documentation for the exact model; an industrial ATEX or IECEx reference alone does not establish underground mine acceptance.
Electrical system
Confirm actual supply voltage, tolerances, frequency and the mine’s connection requirements. Do not infer the allowable supply solely from a number in the model name.
Mechanical and environmental exposure
Provide moisture, dust, ambient temperature, vibration and impact conditions. Check mounting security, cable protection and inspection access with the mine’s requirements.
Visibility and upkeep
Provide tunnel geometry, equipment positions and task locations. Agree lighting criteria and account for contamination, cleaning and maintenance in the proposed layout.

Can an industrial Group II explosion-proof light be used underground?

Do not treat it as a replacement for mine-specific equipment. Underground mines susceptible to firedamp use a different equipment-group context, and local mine rules and operator acceptance also apply. Selection must be made against the actual mine requirements and certificate scope.

Does the model name confirm the operating voltage?

No. Use the current specification, nameplate and installation instructions for the exact delivered model. If catalogue values or naming appear inconsistent, obtain written clarification before ordering or connecting the product.

Are these products replacements for cap lamps or escape lighting?

They are presented here as fixed mining-lighting ranges. Personal cap lamps, emergency escape provision and fixed working illumination have different purposes. Specify those systems separately under the mine’s requirements.

What is needed before a mining-light quotation can be finalised?

Provide the mine and jurisdiction, required approvals, exact supply, mounting arrangement and quantities. Confirm current certification and the operator’s acceptance process early, so the quotation is tied to an identified configuration rather than a generic range name.
