Plan around your working environment.

A manufacturing facility combines different visual tasks under one roof. Operators need to see machine controls, inspectors need to distinguish defects, and maintenance teams need access to equipment above and below the production line. A useful lighting plan separates these tasks before choosing luminaires. TORMIN’s industrial high-bay and fixed LED ranges provide starting points for general production lighting; any classified process area needs a separate hazardous-area selection.

Production halls

Start with ceiling height, machinery positions and available mounting points. Coordinate luminaire spacing with crane travel, overhead services and access platforms. Check illumination at the actual working plane, including areas shadowed by equipment—not only on an empty floor plan.

Assembly and quality inspection

Small components, surface finishes and colour checks can need different lighting from adjacent circulation areas. Record task size, viewing direction and reflective surfaces. Consider local task lighting alongside general lighting, with glare, colour rendering and shadows reviewed for the work being performed.

Plant rooms and maintenance routes

Pumps, substations and service passages need readable labels and clear access to controls. Include vertical surfaces, changes in level and isolation points in the design brief. Keep luminaires accessible for cleaning and replacement without obstructing machinery maintenance.

Classified process areas

Paint mixing, solvent handling or combustible-dust processes may require explosion-protected equipment. Use the site’s area-classification documentation to define the boundary and equipment requirements. An ordinary industrial fitting does not become suitable for a hazardous area because it has a high IP rating.

Use these requirements to build a project-specific specification.

Task visibility
Describe the operations, working-plane heights and inspection needs. Agree maintained illuminance, uniformity and glare criteria against the applicable project standard.
Heat and contamination
Provide the ambient temperature at the mounting location, plus oil mist, dust and cleaning exposure. Review enclosure materials and cleaning access for the actual process.
Electrical and controls
Confirm supply voltage, switching groups and any dimming or occupancy-control requirements. Check the selected driver and control option rather than assuming every variant supports it.
Installation and servicing
Identify mounting structures, cable routes, vibration sources and shutdown windows. Include safe access and a realistic cleaning schedule in the lifetime plan.

Your application questions, answered.

Can one high-bay layout serve the entire factory?

Not always. General lighting can establish background illumination, but machine enclosures, detailed assembly and inspection tasks may require different distributions or additional task lighting. Review the actual equipment layout and working planes before finalising quantities.

How should we compare an LED replacement with existing lamps?

Compare the maintained lighting performance, distribution and glare at the task—not wattage alone. Include operating hours, controls, cleaning and access costs when estimating savings. An existing mounting grid should be checked rather than automatically reused.

Are dimming and occupancy sensors available on every product?

No. Control options depend on the model and configuration. State the control method, zoning and operating pattern in the enquiry so the driver, sensor and wiring arrangement can be confirmed together.

What about lighting near moving machinery?

Include machinery speed and the visual task in the brief. Ask for flicker and stroboscopic-effect information for the proposed driver and operating conditions, particularly where rotating or reciprocating equipment is observed.
