LED color temperature describes whether white light looks warmer or cooler. It is usually expressed as correlated color temperature (CCT), measured in kelvins. Lower CCT generally appears warmer; higher CCT generally appears cooler. CCT is not a measure of brightness.

Separate appearance from performance

Two lights can have the same color temperature but render colored objects differently. Likewise, choosing a cooler appearance does not automatically provide more useful light at the work surface. Compare light output, distribution and color-rendering information separately.

The Department of Energy’s color and spectrum guidance describes CCT as one of the measures used to specify lighting, rather than a complete description of its visual quality.

A practical review before ordering

  • Start with the task. Identify whether workers need to inspect colors, read labels or move through the space.
  • Check nearby lighting. Consider whether the new fittings should match adjacent areas or existing equipment.
  • Review a sample. Where appearance matters, assess a real sample under the intended conditions rather than relying only on a screen image.
  • Record the requirement. Include the requested CCT and any separate color-rendering criteria in the project brief.

Avoid a universal “best” setting

The appropriate choice depends on the task, visual preferences and project requirements. A warmer or cooler appearance should be a documented design choice, not a shortcut for selecting a luminaire.
